Stat of the week: Smartphone ownership nears three quarters of U.S. population

Each month, more and more consumers exchange outdated feature phones for new, online-capable smartphones. A rapidly growing trend, comScore reports that there are now more than 173 million active smartphone users in the United States, approximately 72% of the total market. Moreover, top digital marketing analysts predict that total share of smartphone users could easily surpass three quarters of the U.S. population by year’s end.

But why does this matter for your dealership?

Mobile research is a fundamental part of car shopping. If your dealership doesn’t have a strong mobile presence – more than just a mobile-optimized website – that reaches local consumers when they’re deciding what and where to buy, you’ll miss out on deals. Would-be customers will undoubtedly find their way to nearby, mobile-friendly competitors, negatively affecting your own sales.

Make sure your dealership stays ahead of the mobile curve by reading our new ebook, Navigating Mobile Marketing.

    I read the article, and then the book. Thank you.

    The point is well taken that there has been a shift in consumer auto shopping behavior over the past few years, and especially in just the past year. It points-out that dealers need a mobile inventory export site that handles the conversion to the small screen properly and that does this very well. Good article and book. Very informative. Impressive research and well-written. {contact me }

    1. Steven, thank you so much for the kind words! Glad you had some time to look through the article and ebook, and that you got something out of it. For me, the biggest takeaway is how widespread mobile is in our everyday lives – car shopping is just one of the many ways it manifests itself. I totally agree, even in the past year we’ve seen massive jumps in smartphone ownership and use. Thanks again!
