May sales strong amdist recalls, best-selling cars

On the heels of a sluggish first quarter, pent-up demand, good weather and favorable interest rates helped make for one of the best May sales months in recent years. With nearly all manufacturers posting positive numbers, including General Motors, signs point towards a strengthening automotive industry as we approach the second half of the year. Chrysler reported its best May since 2007 with an increase in sales of 17 percent, while Nissan had its best May ever with an increase in sales of 19 percent.

At a vehicle level, Ford’s F-Series took the top spot in monthly sales with 68,520 units, up 1.9 percent year-to-date. Increased incentives on the Toyota Camry helped vault the model to the number two sales spot, surpassing the Chevrolet Silverado, which hit more than 46,000 units. Compact SUVs and light trucks continued to be top performers, with the Ram pickup,  Honda CR-V, Jeep Cherokee and Nissan Rogue all seeing above average sales in their respective categories.
